Hurricane Sandy: How You Can Help Now

By Lorena O'Neil

Hurricane Sandy has left much of New York City damaged and many in need of assistance in its aftermath. If you are healthy and looking for a way to help, here are a few things you can do:

  • Volunteer at a Red Cross. The Red Cross is looking for volunteers over the age of 16, who are able to lift and carry 50 lbs. They should be comfortable working with people in stressful situations, and available for 12 hour shifts from Wednesday Oct. 31 to Friday Nov. 2. The Red Cross asks you to please provide your full name, contact details, current location and whether you have any Red Cross experience to staffing@nyredcross.org.
  • Volunteer at a hurricane shelter. Trained volunteers can offer their assistance by contacting nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov. Here’s a list of hurricane shelters in northern Manhattan:   IS 118, at 154 West 93rd Street; PS 171, on East 103rd between Fifth and Madison avenues; IS 88, between Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. and Fredrick Douglass Blvd; P.S. 154 at 250 West 127th Street; Bread and Roses High School, at Edgecombe Avenue and West 136th Street; City College, at Amsterdam Avenue and West 138th Street; IS 90, at Jumel Place and West 168th Street; George Washington High School, between Audubon and Amsterdam avenues at West 193rd Street;

  • Donate blood. You can make an appointment to donate blood to the Red Cross here. New York Blood Center is also accepting blood donations.

  • Donate money for relief efforts. Many organizations are working to alleviate the damage caused by Sandy. Salvation Army: Donors can contribute through text message by SMSing the word STORM to 80888 and giving $10. Confirm your donation with the word “Yes.” AmeriCares: This organization is planning to deliver relief supplies to the East Coast. You can submit a donation here. Feeding America: This group is working with food banks and agencies to deliver food and water to those in need. Donations accepted here.

  • Help your neighbors. Check on any elderly or handicapped people you know in your neighborhood to see if they need assistance with damage to their home. Walk down your street and help clear debris. If working with debris, wash your hands with soap and water often. Report any damage you may see to local authorities. Most importantly, use caution when moving large objects.
